Nzuri Weekend Wrap Up

Nzuri Natural Hair Health and Beauty Showcase was a busy 3 day weekend. First it started off with the VIP Mixer present by Curls at The Belvedere in Houston’s Galleria area. It was a relaxed atmosphere where everyone could mix and mingle before the excitement of the next two days kicked in. The owner of Curls also skyped in to tell us all about her products and which products worked best for which hair type. This was also the first time many of the VIP bloggers had a chance to meet with one another. As the evening was winding down I could tell I was in for a real treat over the next 2 days.

Saturday was sensory overload. There was so much to see and do that I was anxious about missing anything. All of the bloggers meet up to mingle before we entered. We also wanted to know what each one of us really wanted to cover for the day. My team and I covered all of the main stage programs and the health classes. But before we attended to any of them we had to check out what vendors were present and what they were selling. I had one goal in mind and that was to buy some black soap. Well I did and a few other things as well. I also took a picture with the designer of one of my favorite natural shirts.

Once we spoke to many of the vendors and did our shopping we split up and manned our stations. I stayed at the main stage to catch video footage of all the presentations and fashion shows for Saturday. The fashion show presented by Macy’s was definitely haute. That Damn Salon Hair fashion show introduced us all to their technique to lengthen your hair using thread. That was interesting. The DJ also played many games with the adult audience between presentations to keep the crowd entertained. And yes, all the games was PG rated. Inertia Justice gave a wonderful poetic performance. Silky Blaze wrote a song just for the ladies. Wasi Townsend played a beautiful acoustic guitar performance. And the night ended with the Nzuri Top “Natural Beauty” Model Competition. It was fierce. Every lady brought her A game and rocked the runway.

Sunday brought a slower pace but still much to see and do before the end of the day. Again my team and I split up (they will post separately), I conducted several interviews that morning, spoke to vendors who I did not get a chance to speak to the day before, sat on the blogosphere panel and watched the Little Mr. “Handsome Man” and Little Miss “Happy” Headed Beauty pageants. The best part was listening to the story of how Miss Jessie’s came to be. These ladies are true gamechangers because they did not allow any obstacles from holding them back on changing the way the world sees curls, kinks and waves.

There was so much that most of the events and workshops attended will be posted separately in more depth. Look out for those posts. We will also have some product review posts next week as well. There was so much that happened at Nzuri we’ll probably be posting about the event for the remainder of the year.
