As a 2012 staff member of Organizing For America, President Obama’s Grassroots Campaign, I was excited to attend the 2013 Inauguration Ceremony. I worked on the Obama Campaign in Fairfax County, Virginia, not far from Washington D.C. This year the inauguration included a flood of people coming into DC for the Inaugural Ceremony, Inaugural Balls, and week long festivities. The day was even more important because we are also celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

At the start of the day, Google Honored Martin Luther King Jr. with this special Google Doodle:

Here are a few highlights from the Inauguration Festivities:

The green ticket section was filled with people from across the world.

This is a view of the inauguration from the green section:

A protestor disturbed part of the ceremony. He actually climbed to the top of a tree and yelled out insults about the president. The police waited until the ceremony was over to safely get him down. They arrested him shortly afterwards.

Obama gives a rousing speech addressing civil rights, equality, and even touching on climate change.

After the inauguration, crowds surged through the city. Police and military personnel were used to manage and guide the crowd:

Alicia Keys changed her song from This Girl Is On Fire to “Obama’s On Fire”:

At the Inaugural Ball Michelle Obama stunned the crowd with a custom made Jason Wu ruby red dress:

Jennifer Hudson sang Al Green’s his song, “Let’s Stay Together”:

Stay tuned for part 2. On Tuesday January 22nd, I will be attending the Inaugural Staff Ball, for Obama Campaign staff. President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will be in attendance. Lady Gaga is also set to perform.

Part Two is now available here…I met the president!

  1. Thank you so much for serving and for sharing these historical pictures. I watched everything at home in Illinois but it is awesome to know someone who was there in person. Keep blogging, serving and sharing!
