5 Ridiculous Reasons Your Blog Isn’t Making Money

1. You are relying solely on Google Adsense.

Black-Man-GoogleAdsense

Google Adsense is a great platform that has changed the lives of millions of bloggers. We use Google Adsense and it works for us. However, if you are just starting out, it will seem like forever to reach the $100 payout threshold in order to get paid. There are many different ad revenue programs out there. Do some online research and find out which programs generate the most revenue for your blog. Here are a few to get started with: ReviewMe.com, Fiverr.com, PayPerPost.com, MyLikes.com, Chitika.com, InfoLinks.com and  BuySellAds.com.

2. There is no “advertise” page on your website.

Have you ever heard of the statement, “Ask and ye shall receive?” I bet you have. I’m here to tell you it is true. If you want your blog to get advertisers, you need to create an advertising page. It doesn’t need to have a lot of information on it, at bare minimum it can have just your email address. By having an advertise page, this lets readers know that your site is available as an advertising resource. If your blog is worth any good ( and I’m sure it is), sponsors will come knocking.

3. Your advertising rates are too high.

Remember this guy?

JImmy-mcmillan

In the 2010 elections he became famous for his, ” The rent is too —– high,” mantra. That is what advertisers will rant if your advertising rates are overpriced. It is good to have high standards, but delusions of grandeur can hurt you. Try to be realistic. Think about your average monthly pageviews, your digital reach and the number of readers on your mailing list. Then think about how much you would realistically pay to advertise on your site if you were an advertiser. Try to be reasonable.

4. You haven’t been mingling offline.

Hiding-Behind-Computer

We hear it all the time. Social media is the way to go. However, there is only so far you can go online. Digital outreach allows for us to reach many different people in a short amount of time. Yet, by attending in-person events, socializing, and sharing business cards, you are more likely to create a genuine personal connection that can be long lasting.

5. Your blog puts people to sleep.

Friends don’t let friends read boring blogs. If your blog is boring. You’re probably not really enjoying what you’re writing about. This happens when a blogger feels forced to blog every day or forced to write about the same topic. It is not necessary to blog every day. Some people believe that it is, but I think that’s the best way for a beginning blogger to burn out. Once you burn out, you start blogging about how many times you blinked today and other nonsensical madness. Just pace yourself so that blogging can remain an enjoying experience. Once you stop enjoying it, your blog will suffer from I’mABoringBlog-itis. Spice it up! If your content doesn’t inform, inspire or bring joy to your readers. It’s time for a change. Try to only blog about what you’re passionate about and the creativity will start pouring in.

  1. This is so hilarious and true! I’m going to work on step #1 and try to find other ad options. Thanks for this great article.

  2. I dont have google ad sense on my blog but I have been thinking about getting it. This helped me consider some things for when I’m ready to start making money with my blog.

    1. Hi Candra,

That’s a good question. For newbie bloggers, I suggest starting ad rates at $25 for homepage ads or site wide. The ads can be small starting at 125X125. Starting out small can encourage businesses to advertise and it will bring attention to other potential advertisers that they can also advertise on your site. Just make sure that you are actively promoting your blog, so that your advertisers get the exposure they paid for.

  3. Great piece! To expound on number 2, I would encourage everyone to put together a media kit as well. It doesn’t have to be extravagant. Just something listing your last month’s analytics and social media follower counts. Show those advertisers why you’re worth advertising with!

    1. Hi Kesha,

You are absolutely right. A media kit is definitely a must. I will be writing a post about that as well. 🙂

  4. Thanks great post!
I have done #1 for too long. Goggle Adsense doesn’t get you much.
I didn’t realize that I should have a page for sponsors to advertise on my site.
It would be very helpful if you did a post how to set up an advertising page. I know friends who own their own business who I can approach.
Now I would need to learn how to set it up.

    1. Hi Axil,

That’s a great idea for a new post. We will publish one about setting up an advertising page per your request. I’ll make sure you get it, when it’s published.

  5. This is really great advice for new bloggers. The advertising page is an excellent idea. Something worth looking into.
Thanks for a great write up!

  6. Thanks for these tips. I have been solely relying on Google Adsense and because my traffic’s too low right now, I haven’t searched into other options. I will look into the suggested above now, despite my sad traffic, lol.
